Which Framework for Technology Defines My Practice Best?
Technology is our future and is becoming irreplaceable from the work place and soon school. When exploring the different frameworks for technology in pedagogy, I honestly understood and connected the most with SAMR. This framework broke everything apart in 4 simple points that totally coordinate with the growth and usage of technology in classrooms, including mine.
What is SAMR?
SAMR stands for:

What is SAMR?
SAMR stands for:
- Substitution- replacing something that can be accomplished with a form a technology (word processor, google docs)
- Argumentation- substitute technology with additional functions (sharing and saving on google docs)
- Modification- redesigning task to do change learning all together (collaborating on a document in real time)
- Redefinition- creation of a completely new task only done using technology (sharing a class globally, sharing and creating videos, creating website and blog pages, the list continues)
As a passionate, technology in the classroom enthusiast, I believe I have attempted all four of these levels. I have become extremely comfortable with S and A, sharing my historical documents online and having students share and create responses to their learning through google classroom. As I fight to get access to more technology (M) becomes more and more prevalent in my teaching. I encourage my students to use technology to work more efficiently together, especially since they have a tool in their hands almost constantly. This can be anything thing from peer editing in real time online to marking up a document using the online tools to simulate annotations.
I wish to hit more on R in the near future. As I mentioned before, without having a chromebook cart or a different form of technology for students at the ready it becomes different. In the past I have created historically based videos where students had to transform what they learned into a PSA or commercial using and sharing it through technology. This is when I taught at a 1:1 school. This is still very possible for me today, especially with cell phones which can be tricky, but becomes difficult when the entire school had only a few carts. Its important to be mindful of fellow teachers and not hog the chromebooks. In the future, as the technology in school grows and adapts R is where I hope to live.
Thanks for your thoughts, Joanna.
ReplyDeleteI feel your pain, Joanna! I'm working my way up the SAMR ladder, too! I'd love to give my students more experience using technology. There's more out there than just MS Word, YouTube, and Fortnite! Good Luck!!
